Bids on the project to expand and renovate the Anderson County Jail came in within the expected price range when they were opened Thursday, according to WYSH Radio in Clinton.
The apparent low bid of $9.66 million was submitted by Rouse Construction of Knoxville, WYSH reported. The other five bids were said to be competitively priced as well.
The county has budgeted $10 million for the overhaul and expansion that includes relocating utility lines and improving the parking lot, the radio station said. The jail expansion involves building a 46,000-square-foot building with space for 212 beds.
The current jail is certified to house 226 inmates but is chronically overcrowded.
The project will also make improvements to the jail’s intake and video visitation areas, as well as the medical clinic and laundry facility.
