More than 1,500 athletes have competed this weekend in the USRowing Youth National Championships on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge. The championship finals in 18 featured events end this afternoon, and 108 athletes are seeking national titles today.

The championships feature some 369 crews from 153 clubs in 30 states competing in back-to-back races.

Racing began at 8 a.m. Friday and is scheduled to end at 2:51 p.m. today. Racing was delayed 30 minutes today due to fog.

Three award ceremonies are scheduled today, one at 11:30 a.m., a second at 1:15 p.m., and the third after the final race.

USRowing said the popularity of the regatta has grown, and this year’s event is the largest in the event’s history. This is the third year the regatta has been held on Melton Hill Lake, a favored race venue for crews from around the country. Organized locally by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association, the event has grown in popularity in the Oak Ridge area and is expected to attract some 5,000 spectators, according to Allen Eubanks, who is the association’s head coach and heads up local regatta efforts.
