Now that the project has received final approval, crews are working quickly to finish demolishing hotels and homes, clean up debris, remove trees, and clear land for a new Kroger Marketplace shopping center at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
Building construction could start in early October, and there could be some blasting at the 25-acre site starting at 2 p.m. Friday.
The $30 million shopping center will be named the Westcott Center in honor of renowned photographer James Edward Westcott, and it is scheduled to open in August 2014.
Demolition crews clean up debris from the former Super 8 motel at the corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue.
Demolition work began July 29.
Westcott Center will include a 123,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace store, a nine-dispenser Kroger fuel center, and services and specialist shops such as Fred Meyer jewelry, Kroger Little Clinic, drive-through pharmacy, Starbucks Coffee, a Bistro, Sushi, Baby World, and Apparel.
It’s one of the most highly anticipated new developments in Oak Ridge and also one of the largest construction projects. The shopping center will be on the northeast side of the intersection of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue.
