Lavender Festival: Hot peppers, thyroid health, city chicks, TN wine!

Hot peppers, thyroid health, city chickens, and cooking with Tennessee wine are the topics of special presentations at the 18th annual Lavender Festival on Saturday, June 18, in Historic Jackson Square in Oak Ridge. Lavender Festival is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with more than 100 artisan vendors. Festival admission and special presentations are free, except where noted, a press release said.

Indoor Presentations

Location: In the white building in the southeast corner of the square near the stairs

  • 10 a.m.—Emily Cleveland-Job, N.D., of Knox Wellness, Knoxville, Tennessee. Topic—Thyroid Health: Thorough Evaluation and Proper Holistic Therapies. She will go into details about proper evaluation of thyroid health and dysfunction, and holistic therapies to optimize thyroid function. Cleveland-Job, a licensed naturopathic doctor, received her doctoral degree from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and completed a residency at Center for Natural Medicine in Portland. She currently practices at Knox Wellness in Knoxville with Dr. Chris Ciano, DO.
  • 11:30 a.m.—Patricia Foreman, Pharmacist, BSc. Animal Science, MPA. Author of “City Chicks,” co-author of “Chicken Tractor.” Former co-host of the “Chicken Whisperer: Backyard Poultry and Sustainable Lifestyles Talk Show” in Buena Vista, Virginia. Topic: Keeping Micro-flocks of Chickens as Garden Helpers, Compost Makers, Bio-recyclers, and Local Food Producers.
  • 1 p.m.—Laura Poland, chef and co-owner of Goodwater Vineyards and Winery in Mosheim, Tennessee. Poland holds a certificate from Rel Maples Institute for Culinary Arts, and has learned many cooking styles from living in Japan and visiting other countries. She offers picnics, catered lunches and weddings at her family farm, vineyard and winery in Mosheim, TN. She will be demonstrating “Cooking with Tennessee Wine.”

Outdoor Presentations and Events

  • 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.: The International Herb Society’s “Herb of the Year” presentation is Capsicum (peppers). Harry Pope, pepper expert from Star Farms will talk about growing, storing, and cooking this useful herb. Star Farms, a vendor at Oak Ridge Farmers Market, is known for its abundance of Capsicum! Location: Under the covered walkway near the old fountain.
  • 8 a.m.-noon: The Oak Ridge Farmers Market is open across from the Square
  • 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: “A Taste of Tennessee Wines,” hosted by Great Valley Wine Trail, under the medium-sized tent in front of Dean’s Restaurant. Tickets are $10 at the gate for those over 21 with valid identification. Tasters receive a free glass and wine tote, and the opportunity to taste and buy award-winning Tennessee wines. A portion of the proceeds of the wine tasting will benefit the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.
  • 8 a.m.-3 p.m.: Children’s activities throughout the Square:
    • Dan Arp’s Bicycle Powered, Musical Merry-Go-Round
    • Planting activities by Fox Brothers Ace Hardware
    • Sand art
    • Balloon art
    • Street performers
    • Face painting
  • All day—live music under the big tent:
    • 8:15 a.m.: Allen McBride
    • 9 a.m.: Good Ole’ Music
    • 10 a.m.: Liz and Tim
    • 11 a.m.: Mighty House Band
    • 12 p.m.: Early Bird Special
    • 1 p.m.: Jubal
    • 2 p.m.: Evan Carawan and Nancy Brennan Strange

Historic Jackson Square, Oak Ridge, has a beautiful new fountain and pleasant sitting area in the center after extensive renovations last summer, the press release said.

The major sponsors of this year’s festival are the Alexander Guest House Assisted Living Facility, and Cowperwood Company. The Thursday Luncheon sponsor is Covenant Senior Health. Other sponsors are Doubletree Hotel, Eckert Chiropractic, East Tennessee FARM Markets, TN Bank, and Trans Tech.
