The Oak Ridge girls cross country team finished third in its first meet of the year, and Coach Allen Etheridge said the girls ran well.
Oak Ridge junior Genevieve Schwartz finished seventh in the girls 5k (5,000-meter) run with a time of 21:31.13.
The A.F. Bridges Cross Country Invitational was in Nashville on Saturday. The Oak Ridge boys finished first.
Knoxville Catholic had two runners in the top 10: Callie Tucker (6th, 21:27.72) and Lindsay Bruce (10th, 21:38.84).
Here are results for the other top seven Oak Ridge runners:
- Robyn Wood (22nd)—22:54.29
- Maddie Zawisza (28th)—23:01.75
- Jessie Strader (30th)—23:14.05
- Eden Gee (52nd)—24:47.79
- Bailey Baldwin (64th)—25:36.16
- Ruthie Froning (70th)—26:03.79
“We have a low stick again in Genevieve, who ran a better second half than probably most kids in the field,” Etheridge said.
A low stick is someone who scores a low number of points. Etheridge said cross country meets used to be scored using popsicle sticks. A lower number of points is better in cross country.
Etheridge said Schwartz has worked very hard to “become a player in her races.”
The girls team ran without Abbey Greenhalgh, who was taking the ACT. That allowed the girls to focus a little on pulling Strader and Gee a bit closer to the front, Etheridge said.
“I was pretty happy with how the girls ran,” he said.
Finishing first in the girls race was Knoxville Catholic with 83 points and an average time of 22:17.24. Baylor School was second with 121 points, and an average time of 22:54.67.
Oak Ridge High School was third with 130 points and an average time of 23:05.81.
The Wildcats race again next week at the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville on Saturday, September 17, at 9 a.m.
