Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank announced today that she has hired local businessman Thomas Shope as her part-time fiscal analyst.
“When I campaigned for office, I pledged to internally audit the books to look for efficiency on behalf of the taxpayer,” Frank said. “Hiring Tom is part of keeping that pledge.”
Frank was elected to her first four-year term as county mayor on Aug. 2.
Shope has a master’s degree in analytical chemistry and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. A press release said he has provided fiscal management for both government and private sector businesses for the past 24 years. He has served as an auditor, business analyst, statistician, and director of business development, the release said.
Frank said Shope will serve as an outside observer who can help the county become more efficient, save money, and implement reforms that will benefit taxpayers and those who work for them.
“Tom brings to county government over two decades of working in the area of fiscal responsibility,” Frank said. “My intent in bringing Tom in is to find ways to operate at more efficient cost to the taxpayer, and also improve how we serve the taxpayer.”
He has also proved that he is trustworthy, Frank said, having maintained government security clearances.
Frank said she asked Shope several weeks ago if he would be willing to take “a career detour” and help the county government. Shope agreed.
“I have had many opportunities to serve my community over the years, both in my professional career and through volunteer service with my church and nonprofits,” Shope said. “I look forward to supporting Mayor Frank in bringing new jobs to our communities while improving fiscal responsibility.”
Shope and his wife Debbie have two adult daughters and live in Oak Ridge.
