Saturday morning flurries dump an inch or more of snow

South Illinois Avenue Accident

A furniture truck and a sedan crashed Saturday morning on slippery, snow-covered South Illinois Avenue. There didn’t appear to be any injuries, but the northbound lanes were closed for more than an hour.

The last time it snowed in Oak Ridge, some residents were disappointed that it didn’t stick.

This time was different. Saturday morning flurries quickly dumped an inch of snow or more on Oak Ridge, covering roadways and making driving treacherous.

There appeared to be at least several minor accidents, including on Oak Ridge Turnpike, Lafayette Drive, and South Illinois Avenue.

Oak Ridge Snow Trucks

Oak Ridge municipal trucks spread salt in the northbound lanes of South Illinois Avenue downhill from Centrifuge Way and headed into the city.

A crash involving a sedan and a furniture truck that reportedly slid coming down a hill on snow-covered South Illinois Avenue near Centrifuge Way blocked traffic in the northbound lanes for more than an hour late Saturday morning. There were apparently no injuries, and Oak Ridge municipal snow trucks spread salt on South Illinois Avenue before the northbound lanes were re-opened around noon.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect through Sunday morning. The National Weather Service in Morristown said light snow accumulations are expected in northern areas and in the mountains.

Feb. 2 Snow Flurries

Saturday morning snow flurries in Oak Ridge quickly dumped an inch of snow or more, covering roadways and making driving treacherous.

Most locations across northeast Tennessee and Southwest North Carolina can expect one to three inches of snow, the Weather Service said. The most snowfall will be across southwest Virginia and the higher elevations of East Tennessee above 2,500 feet, where two to five inches are possible.

The forecast for Oak Ridge said snow is likely before 3 p.m. and again before 7 p.m., and then again after 10 p.m. The high should be near 38, and the low tonight around 30.

Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible, and the new snow accumulation tonight could also be a half-inch or less.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
