One person died in a hang glider crash near Oliver Springs Airport in Anderson County on Saturday, authorities said.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the crash just after 5 p.m. Saturday, said Tyler Mayes, director of administrative services for the Sheriff’s Office. But it’s not clear what time the crash occurred.
The crash was along Smith Road east of the airport. It’s not clear if the hang glider had any connection to the airport.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and many details are unclear, such as whether the pilot was male or female, whether the glider was motorized, how big it was, and where the flight originated. The initial report was that the glider was motorized, Mayes said.
The Sheriff’s Office has contacted the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Sheriff’s Office is interviewing witnesses, and an on-call detective is responding to the crash, Mayes said.
Authorities have been told that the woman who called 911 heard the crash, Mayes said.
Note: The man who died in the crash has been identified as Patrick Scott Lucas, 45, of Morristown. The Federal Aviation Administration will start a crash investigation Sunday, July 14. See newer story here.
